Introduction to NBRI
National Battery Research Institute (NBRI)

The National Battery Research Institute (NBRI) is Indonesia’s premier independent institute for electrochemical energy storage science and technology. It is dedicated to research and development, training and education, testing and standardization, international conferences, exhibitions, social impact initiatives, and publishing. NBRI aims to address issues in battery technology from upstream to downstream, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement, and Indonesia’s clean energy transition program through Renewable Energy (RE) and Electric Vehicles (EVs).

As a collaborative platform, NBRI brings together scientists, academicians, industry partners, government stakeholders, and experts in battery technology and renewable energy. Its primary mission is to foster a robust battery manufacturing industry using local resources while equipping Indonesia with competent professionals in the field. Through strategic partnerships and knowledge-sharing, NBRI envisions an energy-independent Indonesia.

NBRI’s Founding and Achievements

NBRI was legally established on December 7, 2020, as the Center of Excellence Innovation of Battery and Renewable Energy Foundation, founded by Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Evvy Kartini and co-founded by Prof. Dr. Alan J. Drew. The institute has received support from the UK Government’s Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF) and Queen Mary University London (QMUL), United Kingdom.

Since January 2020, NBRI has conducted over 297 activities and delivered 78 projects at national and international levels, engaging 968 institutions and reaching more than 12,654 participants across 38 countries. These activities include Focus Group Discussions, lectures, workshops, webinars, joint research programs, and annual international conferences. With an impressive satisfaction score of 4.8 out of 5, NBRI has successfully positioned itself as a leading institution in the battery research and development landscape.

International Battery Summit 2023

One of NBRI’s landmark achievements in 2023 was the successful organization of the International Battery Summit 2023, held on August 1-2 in Grand Sahid Jakarta. This event brought together 327 participants from 172 institutions and companies across 12 countries, including 48 industry experts as speakers. The summit facilitated discussions on the battery industry’s entire supply chain, with participants representing the private sector (42%), government and state-owned enterprises (36%), and non-government organizations, research institutes, and universities (22%).

Education, Training, and Certification
Strengthening Indonesia’s Human Resources

NBRI recognizes the critical role of human resource development in fostering industrial growth. While Indonesia has made significant strides in infrastructure development, there remains a gap in the quality of skilled professionals. The rise of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and renewable energy technologies poses both an opportunity and a challenge, requiring extensive upskilling efforts.

To bridge this gap, NBRI offers a series of educational programs, training sessions, and skill development initiatives spanning the entire battery industry value chain—from upstream resource extraction to downstream manufacturing and application. This comprehensive approach ensures Indonesia is well-prepared for the technological advancements shaping the BEV and renewable energy industries.

SKKNI on Battery Pack

A notable milestone in this journey was the establishment of the Competency Standard National Working Indonesia (SKKNI) on Battery Pack. Recognizing the chemical and electrical risks associated with batteries, NBRI played a pivotal role in advocating for standardization. In 2022, NBRI was appointed by Indonesia’s Ministry of Manpower as the working group leader for SKKNI on Battery Pack, which was officially ratified later that year.

Internship Programs

NBRI also provides internship opportunities for students and fresh graduates, offering hands-on experience in battery technology development. In 2023, the institute welcomed 30 interns from 14 institutions, contributing to their professional growth and expanding their understanding of the battery ecosystem.

International Battery School 2023
A Global Learning Initiative

The International Battery School is an annual event by NBRI, designed to offer specialized training on battery technology. Launched in 2021, the program has continuously evolved to align with industry trends and address key challenges in the battery ecosystem.
